it’s safe to say that most people in are society view and experience love in a disjointed, choppy manner. we are socialized from early on in our lives to fear love.
it comes at a cost.
you want it. you desire it. you need it.
but the problem is that we don’t realize that we are love.
love is within. not without.
there’s this insanely catchy, hard thumping baseline and a melodic swooning of a voice that first gets my attention. next are references to coachella, jigga, (DJ) z-trip, viagra, weed and porn all within a :45 span. frank ocean had me at “ice blue bong.”
novacane can be that breakout hit that ocean has been working tirelessly towards: or it can continue to be an underground, slightly top 40, mastery that was, coincidentally, nurtured by a misguided mainstream record label. either way, novacane was just a glimpse into nostalgia, ULTRA., ocean’s debut album, that he released for free.
the first single barely scratched the surface of what was to come; interludes named after video games, “bitches and they jodeci,” samples of hotel california, electric feel, there will be tears and strawberry swing (a coldplay song off of their last album, which I actually have and listened to quite a bit but always skipped that particular song…) and an array of sensory details that engulfs you in the moment.
nostalgia, ULTRA. is meant to be a shared experience. so i willingly swam the ocean (yea horrible pun but it was too easy!).
each interlude and most songs end with ocean stopping, flipping, then restarting a cassette tape - remember those - giving that nostalgic feel. that took me back to a special time when i first began discovering music and begging my sister to drive me to her friend’s place to buy bootleg cassettes. you haven’t truly experienced music until you’ve burnt out a mc hammer cassette tape.
close your eyes and you’re swimming thru strawberry fields, getting high at coachella and making porn with an aspiring dentist, having faith in MAN and that marriage is between “love and love” not “man and woman” (we try), admitting to making songs just to get “bitches,” going through heartbreak (lovecrimes, swim good), loneliness and a fatherless childhood (there will be tears), a library filled with lost songs and girls (dust), a social commentary of america’s fly by night, hypocritical marriage standards (american wedding) and your journey ends abruptly after fucking under cherry leaves (nature feels).
there are hiccups here and there with unfinished, under realized lyrics, but that too creates the aura of a normal, humanizing experience of a young adult. sometimes you just don’t know what to say, *shrugs*. but the musical flow of the album is on point.
nostalgia, ULTRA. is meant to be digested in one session, taking in all aesthetics that frank ocean throws your way. swim good.
Starting tomorrow, I go on a 3 week little to no sugar and diary diet. Let’s see how tough I am against my weaknesses.
breaks my heart to email my cousin back and forth knowing he won’t get to see anything i’m talking about… that’s the price you pay though for breaking the law.
am i the only one that think german is the sexiest spoken language in the world?
learning that psychology & mind goes hand-in-hand with health & fitness.
also that everything takes time. Spiral upward; gently & persistently.
Initial reaction to gaga’s born this way, over produced but it suits the album. Kinda spotty lyrics and flow of the album is kinda off. But overall, great showing. More to come.
Motivation: telling me something I can’t do. Fuck reassuring, positive messages. Give me negativity. I feed off of that.
“The convergence of your answers to these three questions should dictate your path in life. 1) What brings you joy? 2) What are you good at? 3) What does the world need you to do?” Answering this will kill me…
